After many many efforts to to figure out how to get Photoshop to render colours properly when using “Save for Web & Devices” I believe I have the definitive answer (but please try it out and feel free to comment if does or doesn’t work for you or you have a better solution).  I read blog after blog and scoured froums and tried every setting in Photoshop that everyone recommended with no success.  Then after discovering iunformation about gamma settings and OS X and various color management tools I found the ColorSync Utility which solved my issues.  Open up this application and select the Devices tab.  Then go into Displays and set all available to use /System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/sRGB Profile.icc as their Profile (click on the down arrow next to Current Profile to find it.) and your screen will change to match the new profile.  You might find it a little odd at first since you’ve been using a different one for a while, but now when you save an image for web in Photoshop it will look exactly like your PSD.

  • Pixel Perfect Web Design

Zoom & Measure Whenever you need your web design to be pixel perfect a nice simple way to check things out is to to use CTRL+ (Mac: APPLE+) in Firefox to zoom in (use “-” for out) and then use the MeasureIt add-on to count the pixels.

Quick, simple and easier than screen capturing and bringing the cap into PhotoShop to examine.

  • I just started using Dropbox for online storage, complete with 2GB, thanx to my new twitter friend ShaneSponagle.  It’s a nice online web storage site with both public and private storage.  You can create shared folders, and files in the public folder have a simple URL for direct linking.  The only thing it should have as a feature is the ability to have a link to a private or shared file ask for a login so you can easily just email or post links to files.  And at 2GB it’s not the biggest out there, but I do like the basics of the shared folder.  Still I wouldn’t use any of these as a primary tool, until you check them all out.  With such a large range of features and competition I don’t see a clear winner to meet everyone’s needs.

If you join from the link above you’ll get an additional 250MB bonus and then when you refer friends you’ll get 250MB for each friend up to 3GB.

Have you ever lost a window, something that can happen when you switch often between using a windows laptop on it’s own and with an extra monitor.  Or if you somehow manage to drag the window off screen and get it back. Pistachio to the rescue from the land of the rising sun.  This great little program sits in your tray and allows you to find a window and relocate it to any location on screen.  It also boasts a number of other great features.

    • You can control the sound volume from the mouse wheel.
    • Lock your mouse and keyboard while cleaning them, useful if you at your desk while at work.
    • Force a window to always be on top.
    • Snap windows to each other or the screen edge when resizing or moving, perfect for the seriously anal amongst us.

  • GeekWare: Modify Headers for Firefox

Ever develop a web site that displays different content based on the visitor’s browser’s language settings? The server side code would look for the accept-language header and then do it’s magic. But how do you test this easily. Introducing Modify Headers for Firefox. Simply setup a new header with these parameters and you can start browsing as if you spoke Spanish (or whatever other language you prefer):

    Action: Modify
    Name: accept-language
    Value: es-mx,es-us,es
